Overview of tapered roller bearings

Tapered roller bearing is a kind of separation type rolling bearing. Its core design feature is that the roller and raceway are tapered, and the extension line meets at a point on the bearing axis. This unique design allows it to withstand both large radial loads and axial loads (usually unidirectional). Due to its excellent load capacity and rigidity, it plays a crucial role in numerous fields such as automotive, machine tools, and construction machinery.


Features of tapered roller bearings

1.Separability: The inner and outer ring components can be installed separately, which greatly facilitates installation, disassembly and post-maintenance.
2.Cone Angle: The cone Angle of the inner and outer ring raceway determines the ability of the bearing to bear the axial load. The larger the cone Angle, the stronger the ability to withstand the axial load.


Tapered roller bearing structure

Tapered roller bearings are usually composed of four basic components:
1.Inner ring (inner ring and roller assembly) : "Conical inner ring" with tapered raceway is assembled with cage and roller.
2.Outer ring (outer ring) : "Conical outer ring" also with a tapered raceway.
3.Tapered roller: the roller as the rolling body is conical table shape, using line contact mode, good contact with the raceway, so the load capacity is large.
4.Cage: Used to evenly separate and guide rollers to prevent them from colliding with each other. Common materials are stamped steel plate or engineering plastics (such as polyamide).


Working principle of tapered roller bearings

The "tapered" design of tapered roller bearings is the essence of its function. Since the intersection of the raceway surface extension lines is located on the axis of the bearing, the roller can achieve pure rolling on the raceway. When subjected to radial load, an axial component force is generated, so tapered roller bearings usually need to be mounted in pairs to counteract this internal axial force and to withstand the axial load in both directions.


Main advantage of tapered roller bearings

1.High load capacity: The roller and raceway line contact design, so that its radial and axial load capacity is much higher than the point contact of the ball bearing.
2.High rigidity: Preload can be applied during installation to eliminate the internal clearance, thus significantly improving the rigidity of the shaft and reducing vibration and noise during operation.
3.Easy to install and adjust: by adjusting the axial relative position of the inner and outer ring, the clearance or pretension of the bearing can be set accurately.
